Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, (TAS), ndc, psc, BN

Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, (TAS), ndc, psc, BN joined Bangladesh Navy on 24 Jul 1984 as cadet and was commissioned on 01Jan 1987. Since commission he received training from both home and abroad. His major courses at home includes Basic course at Chittagong naval base, Diploma on Weather Meteorology from Agargaon Meteorological Training Center, Dhaka, Basic Intelligence Course from School of Military Intelligence, Comilla, Junior Staff Course (JSC) from Bangladesh Naval Academy and Staff Course from Defense Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur. His courses abroad include Basic and Advance Courses on Mine Warfare, Anti-Submarine Warfare, language course and a second staff course from War College, Turkey. He also completed National Defense Course from National Defense College, Mirpur, Dhaka. In his illustrated service carrier, he commanded 5 BN ships including one Frigate. He also commanded Flying Wing of Naval Aviation and BNS HAJI MOHSIN, a shore establishment of BN. As Staff Officer, he served in Armed Forces Division, Special Security Force, Naval Headquarters, Area Headquarters and Executive Officer of different ships and shore establishments of BN. As instructor, he served in the professional Schools of BN officers and sailors, Bangladesh Naval Academy and as Directing Staff to BN JSC. He took part in UN peacekeeping operations mission in Sudan as Contingent Commander of a riverine Unit. Prior joining as Director General to the Department of Shipping he served as the Serjeant at Arms at the National Parliament of Bangladesh. He is happily married and blessed with a daughter and a son.

Commodore Mohammed Zakiur Rahman Bhuiyan took over as Director General, Department of Shipping on 24 Dec 2013.

Commodore Zakiur was born on 01 March 1959 in Khulna. He joined Bangladesh Navy on 01 October 1977 as an Officer Cadet and was commissioned in Weapon Electrical Branch on 01 April 1980.

The Commodore graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) in 1982 and completed Weapon Specialization Course in Indian Navy from 1983 to 1985. He is a distinguished graduate of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Dhaka and an alumnus of Armed Forces Staff College, Malaysia. He did Integrated Naval Communication System Course in Germany, UN Peace Keeping Course in Canada and Higher Defence Course for Asia-Pacific Senior Officers in Spain.

The Commodore served onboard Bangladesh Navy Frigates ABU BAKR, ALI HAIDER, OSMAN and BANGABANDHU in various capacities. His important ashore appointments include Missile Radar Engineer in Missile Base ULKA, Directing Staff of Junior Staff Course in Bangladesh Naval Academy, General Manager Personnel Administration in Naval Dockyard, Naval Armament Supply Officer, Directing Staff in Command & Staff College Mirpur, Instructor in Electrical School, Staff Officer under Commander Chittagong Naval Area and Commander Chittagong Naval Fleet. As the Project Weapon Electrical Officer, to build a modern Frigate BANGABANDHU in Korea from 1998 to 2991, he was responsible for supervision of installation and trial of electrical equipment, communication systems, weapons and the state of the art integrated combat management system.

He served at Naval Headquarters as Director of Naval Armament Inspection & Supply, Naval Secretary and Drafting Authority. The Commodore had the proud privilege of serving as PSO in the Naval Headquarters in the capacity of Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Logistics) from 2009 to 2013, when under his guidance the naval salary system and inventory management were brought under automation.

For his distinguished service, Commodore Zakiur has been awarded with the বিশিষ্ট সেবা পদক (BSP) in 2013 and অসামান্য সেবা পদক (OSP) in 2014.

Commodore Zakiur is married to Tuhina Parveen and they are blessed with two daughters and one son.
